Video Volunteers community correspondent Nitu Chakhia reports about the efforts Odisha's transgender community has taken to bring awareness and assistance in times of the COVID-19 pandemic.
She spoke to Menaka Parida, a transgender from Odisha's Khurdha district who has used her community's resources to sanitise her surroundings, distribute masks in slums and run a community kitchen for poor neighbourhoods.
This, despite Menaka and her community facing discrimination and ridicule for being a transgender. Menaka appeals to society at large to treat people of her community with love and respect as they are a part of our society too.
In the fight against a global pandemic, Menaka and her community have shown that an individual's gender does not matter. What matters is the grit and resolve to be helpful to those around you and your community.
